FAQs

What ages do you teach?

I welcome students of all ages! My piano studio includes children, teens, and adults, while voice students range from children (generally age 8 and up) to university students, working professionals, and retirees.

For young singers, I typically begin formal voice lessons around age 8, when the voice is mature enough to start developing healthy technique. If your child is close to that age and loves to sing, I'd be happy to chat about whether they're ready.

Do I need previous musical experience?

Not at all! Many students begin with no previous experience, while others return to music after several years away or are looking to take their skills to the next level.

Lessons are always tailored to your goals, whether you're learning for fun, preparing for performances, or working toward Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) examinations.

Do you teach adults?

Absolutely! Nearly half of my studio is made up of adult students.

Some adults are complete beginners, some played as children and are rediscovering music, and others are experienced musicians looking to refine their technique. Adults often tell me they wish they'd started sooner, and it's never too late.

What styles of music do you teach?

Piano students explore a wide variety of styles, including classical, contemporary, film music, Broadway, jazz, and popular repertoire.

Voice students primarily study healthy classical technique, which provides a strong foundation for musical theatre, choral singing, and contemporary styles. Lessons can also include diction, interpretation, audition preparation, and performance skills.

Do you prepare students for RCM exams?

Yes! Students may choose to prepare for Royal Conservatory of Music examinations if that aligns with their goals.

Exams are never mandatory, but they provide an excellent framework for students who enjoy setting measurable goals and tracking their progress.

How long should my lessons be?

Lesson length depends on the student's age, experience, and goals.

  • 30 minutes: Ideal for young beginners learning piano.

  • 45 minutes: A great fit for most singers and intermediate students.

  • 60 minutes: Recommended for advanced students, exam preparation, or students studying multiple subjects.

If you're unsure which lesson length is best, I'm happy to help you decide.

Do you offer online lessons?

Yes! Lessons are available in person at my South Etobicoke studio, online, or as a hybrid combination of both.

Many students appreciate the flexibility of switching to an online lesson when travel, weather, or illness makes coming to the studio difficult.

What happens if I need to miss a lesson?

Weekly students are asked to provide at least 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule a lesson.

When illness prevents that notice, I offer several flexible options whenever possible, including Zoom lessons, make-up lessons, or personalized practice videos.

Full details can be found in the Studio Policy.

How much should I practice?

Consistent practice is much more important than long practice sessions.

We'll discuss realistic practice goals based on each student's age, schedule, and musical goals. Even a few focused practice sessions each week can lead to tremendous progress.

What instrument do I need?

Piano students should have access to a piano or a full-sized touch-sensitive keyboard for home practice.

Voice students don't need any special equipment, although having a keyboard or piano available at home can be very helpful as musical skills develop.

Where are lessons held?

Lessons take place in my private teaching studio in South Etobicoke, conveniently located near Long Branch GO Station with free street parking nearby.

Online and hybrid lessons are also available for students throughout Ontario and beyond.

How do I get started?

Getting started is easy!

Simply send me a message through the contact form, tell me a little about yourself (or your child), and I'll help you choose the lesson type that's the best fit. From there, we'll schedule your first lesson and begin your musical journey!
